It is with profound sadness and grief that we inform our community of the sudden passing of long-time BH-BL High School social studies teacher and varsity swim coach Matt Turner. Our thoughts and sincerest sympathies are with his family during this difficult time.
Matt was a beloved teacher who brought history to life in his classroom and had a teaching style that easily kept students engaged in learning. He was a kind and thoughtful person, and a friend and mentor to many of his colleagues.
Matt played such an important role in many students’ academic and athletic lives having taught at BH-BL High School for 20 years and coaching varsity swimming for nearly as many years. His dedication to his students and his passion for them to succeed in the classroom and in the pool were just two of the many endearing qualities Matt possessed.
“Matt was a passionate teacher and coach. He poured his heart and soul into his students, in the classroom and in the pool,” said High School Principal Tim Brunson. “I was fortunate to start my career at BH-BL in the Social Studies Department with Mr. Turner in 2000, and have fond memories of working together with him. He will be missed–as a teacher, as a coach, as a colleague, and as a friend.”
Out of respect for Coach Turner and his athletes, the Suburban Council postponed today’s Suburban Council Championship Swim Meet. Additionally, there will be counseling services available for both students and staff this weekend virtually and all day on Monday, March 1, 2021 in the Wellness Center and Library Media Center. Students should not hesitate to reach out to Mr. Brunson to make appropriate arrangements.
Saratoga County Department of Health informed the district that it has been established Mr. Turner was negative for COVID-19 through Ellis Hospital’s testing.
