New York State Educational Learning Standards for Science
The New York State Education Department has established learning standards for Science denoting the skills and abilities each student should attain at various levels of his or her education – elementary, middle and high school levels.
Elementary School Level
Science in grades K-5 involves the investigation, appreciation and discussion of natural phenomena and how scientific information is organized and processed. Students focus the experience of conducting investigations and reporting their findings. Students in grade K-5 study science through targeted resources and experiences supporting the new science learning standards.
Middle School Level
The goal of science at the middle school is to enable students to understand science concepts through the use of scientific inquiry. Students will develop their skills of analysis, inquiry, and design through active laboratory work on a regular basis. While basic terminology is necessary in science, it is more important that students can explain, analyze, and interpret scientific processes and phenomena.
High School Level
High school students must complete 3 units of Science to complete the New York State’s requirements for earning a Regents diploma or Advanced Regents diploma, and 4 units of Science for an Advanced Regents diplomas with BH-BL Merit Seal.
The Science Department aims to offer all students the opportunity to investigate fundamental laws and principles that govern the universe and to understand the phenomena that affect our daily lives. Although the sequence of Earth Science, Biology, Chemistry and Physics is standard, individualized scheduling to match needs is encouraged. Advanced courses are open to all qualified students.
