School leaders are excited to begin the Building Our 2nd Century II construction project that was approved by voters in October 2018. Among other things, this project includes the addition of a secure entrance at the middle school, districtwide classroom upgrades, high school auditorium renovations, a new transportation facility, and roof repairs. The Building Our 2nd Century II project kicks off this summer with roof repairs and asbestos removal at BH-BL High School, O’Rourke Middle School, and Pashley Elementary School. The roof work is expected to begin at the end of June and is anticipated to take approximately six weeks to complete.
In adherence with industry standards and best practices, as well as fiscal responsibility, the roof work at the schools will be completed on a 24-hour cycle. This means that throughout the day the roofing crews will replace the sections of roofing that were removed the previous night. Night work at the three schools will begin at 11 p.m. and conclude at 6 a.m. During those hours the roofers will use small tower lights that will be pointed directly at the work areas. Additionally, the roofers will at times need to use roof removal equipment. Roof work is done in a continuous 24-hour cycle so as not to expose the interior of buildings to external elements.
The oldest and most deteriorated sections of roofing that will be removed and replaced include the sixth-grade wing at the middle school; the second floor wing at Pashley; and the cafeteria, athletic hallway/wing, and the science wing (adjacent to the turf field) at the high school.
