Tri-M, or Modern Music Masters, is a music honor society in which you may gain membership for a combination of your music-related and academic accomplishments. Tri-M members are selected for their exceptional scholarship, leadership, service, and character. Eligible student musicians may apply for membership and join us in our mission to benefit our school district and community through music in the following ways:
- Focusing public attention on the BH-BL music program through community service
- Providing positive student energy in order to strengthen our school music program
- Inspiring and challenging our members
- Motivating and recognizing our members’ musical and personal achievements, credits, and grades
- Helping members reach their full musical potential
- Encouraging members to work together toward common goals
In order for you to be considered for induction into Chapter 7455, it is necessary to fulfill the following criteria:
- Music Participation. Candidates must be enrolled in a major ensemble (Band/Chorus/Orchestra) at the high school to be considered. After selection and induction, students must maintain enrollment in a major ensemble to qualify for continuing membership.
- Grades/Scholarship. Candidates must have maintained a high school grade point average of at no less than an “A” average for all music classes and a “B” average for all classes combined.
- Leadership/Service. Candidates must meet at least three of the benchmarks listed below:
- Participation in Conference All-State
- Participation in Area All-State
- Participation in Suburban Council
- Participation in All-County
- Participation in an outside ensemble (by chapter advisor approval)
- Membership in HS extracurricular ensemble (Select Choir, Pep Band, Jazz Band, Chamber Strings)
- Studies privately on their major ensemble instrument or voice
- Studies privately on a secondary instrument or piano
- Completed or enrolled in any supplemental Music Department curricular course offering
- Member of Cast, Crew, or Pit Orchestra for HS/MS musical production
- Current or former auditioned section leader in any HS musical ensemble
- Provided verifiable musical tutoring to MS/Elementary students
- Membership in the Junior Tri-M chapter at O’Rourke Middle School
- Completion of 10 or more community service hours last school year
- Received a rating of Excellent or Outstanding on a Level IV, V or VI NYSSMA solo evaluation
- Character. The following criteria must be evidenced by the candidate:
- Sets an example of good citizenship
- Follows school policies and procedures
- Willing to accept responsibility
- Respectful of others and their property
- Exhibits truthfulness and integrity
- Reliable and punctual
- Exhibits patience, empathy and understanding
If you are interested in applying for membership in Chapter 7455 of the Tri-M Music Honor Society, please complete and return the application to either your ensemble director, Mr. O’Shea, or to the Fine Arts office by Friday, October 21. You will also need two teachers to complete recommendation forms on your behalf by the due date. Should you be accepted, please reserve the evening of November 7 in your calendar for attendance at our induction ceremony to be held that evening at 7 pm in the High School Auditorium.
